End of Watch by Stephen King

Image
Stephen King’s book “End of Watch” is the final part of the trilogy about detective Bill Hodges and his final fight with Brady Hartsfield, aka “Mr. Mercedes”. Despite coma, paralysis and a vegetative state during last five years due to a brain injury, Brady woke up and does not lose hope of realizing his long-standing plan to destroy as many people as possible. The desire to finish what he started, to get closure. By the way, closure cycle usually involves not only obtaining the desired result, but also a powerful incentive for future development, self-awareness and acceptance of your needs, but I still do not understand what Brady was planning to do and how to live on. Previous attempts at massacre for the character were more likely a springboard for a new, hitherto unknown method of manipulating the consciousness of innocent victims - through a game gadget (portable console) with the game “Fishing”. For Brady's victims, it was mesmerizing and eye-catching. This time, Brady i...

The Minds of Billy Milligan by Daniel Keyes

Image
What is striking instantly in this book is that the events described here are not fictitious, but based on the life of a real person (William Stanley Milligan, 1955-2014) with a diagnosis of  multiple personality disorder, better known as "split personality." It is not easy to read this book due to its documentary character. But it is understandable and justified: there is an abundance of characters, medical terms, names of drugs, and judicial proceedings. Let me remind that the main character's (Billy’s) consciousness was "populated" by 24 different people (these are small children, adolescents, girls, adult men, each of whom had a different level of intelligence, diverse knowledge, skills, abilities, and even talents). Sometimes they were not even aware of each other’s existence and about the so-called "core" personality. Having found himself in a prison cell, Billy gradually finds out that he is accused of rape and robbery. The root cause of al...

“Home for Christmas” by Annie Groves Review

Image
“Home for Christmas” by Annie Groves tells a touching story of five women united by the sorrows of World War II. Four of them are young girls (Tilly, Sally, Dulcie, and Agnes) who work hard and learn what love and heartbreak are for the first time. The fifth is Olive, Tilly’s kind-hearted mother, who rents her house in London for young ladies and takes care of them as if they were her own family. All characters have their own melodramatic life stories. Sally arrives in London to escape the father, who betrayed her passed mother the very day after her death because of a long and terminal illness. Also, she realized that the boy she was in love with never supported her. Sally chooses to become a nurse in a martyred city being sorry for all the injured during the bombings. Dulcie is the daughter of a woman who hates her girl due to the loss of her youngest and most beloved offspring. Dulcie was in no way involved in this tragedy, but the mother just chooses to direct her fury toward the ...

Nicholas Evans "Horse Whisperer" Review

Image
When you start reading the book, you might think at first, "It is a lovely story about the childhood, friendship, family values, and understanding between humans and horses, isn't it?" However, get prepared to face the ugly facts of life. Former happy and healthy girl acquires a disability and an emotional trauma. The previously strong and graceful horse is gravely injured and scared to death. Togetherness and strong bonds of the family fall apart irrevocably. Still, in spite of the terrible accident and the difficulties of post-adaptation, the characters manage to recover and begin to live to the full. I am not a puritan or a killjoy, but I felt betrayed when the girl's mother sidelined the daughter's issue. When it comes to the suffering of a child, it is impossible to think about some dirty things. Besides, career advancement becomes something secondary. Well, never say never. The book raises many eternal and emotional topics, such as the problem of fath...

Stephen King's Novel "Carrie" Review

Image
Despite the unusual gift (or rather, curse) of the main character (the girl Carrie has telekinetic abilities), I would not say that the genre of the book is science fiction or horror; in my opinion, it is a psychological novel.  The final outburst of Carrie’s rage and revenge is the aftermath, but the root cause of everything is the brutality of surrounding people. They were amused by her suffering. What is more, they asserted themselves humiliating the girl and causing Carrie pain. It was not a life, but survival. On the one hand, the reader can deeply sympathize with the protagonist, because it is impossible to remain indifferent seeing her difficult fate. On the other hand, evil breeds evil; her vendetta has proved nothing. It seems to me that there was another way in her situation. For example, finding a hobby, trying to learn more about herself (what she liked, what inspired her and what was important), trying not to pay too much attention to difficul...
